Chapter 23

WINTRY

I awoke to a hand shaking my shoulder. I peered upward. Blaize crouched beside me.

“Come on, pup, get up,” he whispered.

I looked over my shoulder at Fane and Lark sleeping a few feet away, their rib cages rising and falling with their even breaths. My eyes flickered up toward the pieces of sky peeking through the pockets of smog, the pollution a lighter haze today. The early light of dawn tinted the sky in a soft blue, wisps of violets, and sherbet hues freckling the sky.

I rubbed my eyes with the bud of my palms. “It’s too early to travel, Blaize,” I groaned.

I nearly grabbed hold of his arm to tug him back down beside me. My body craved his. The power that emanated from his being as he lay next to me, the night before, rinsed a sense of calm and security over me. My skin had prickled at the idea of us sleeping against each other at first, but the fear of the Reapers won out. I soon found that Dangere made excellent heated blankets in the cool night air, their body’s throwing off more warmth than humans.

Blaize flashed a lopsided grin. “We’re not heading out,” he corrected me. “We’re stepping up your training.”

My eyes snapped open at the declaration. Though I was eager to shift and master my inner beast, to purge the animalistic side of me, the awareness of the burning pain that would surely arise caused me to almost tremble at the thought of voluntarily shifting.

“We’re not shift training today,” he told me, obviously sensing my trepidation. “We’ll be doing something different.”

I lifted a brow. “What will we be doing?” I said quietly so as not to wake the others.

Blaize’s eyes gleamed. “Defense training.”

Rising, he placed an index finger to his lips in a shushing motion, jutting his chin toward his sleeping packmates. Then, beckoning me with his hand, he turned and ambled silently through the underbrush. Sighing, I stumbled to my feet and trailed after him, attempting to walk without making my steps known.

We trekked through the forest; the song of crickets and other insects danced on the breeze. The dew that speckled various bushes moistened my pants as we weaved through the underbrush. I inhaled. The air seemed slightly fresher with the cool mist in this region, unlike the ruined city of Vegas. We must’ve been in another territory of the country, what the country was once known to have ‘states.’ I wonder which old state are we in? The wind howled, the air breezing through my thin shirt, nipping at my skin.

I rubbed at my sleeved arms in an attempt to generate some heat. A weight settled over my shoulders, and I glanced to find Blaize’s jacket draped across my back. I looked questioningly at Blaize. He gifted me with an alluring smile before resuming the lead. A traitorous smile parted my lips, my insides quivering with delight at his kind gesture.

I allowed my eyes to trail over the lean muscles
